What’s your role at Groop?
I am a Full-Stack Developer and am responsible for building new functionality for our customers and implementing improvements.
What does a typical day look like?
A typical day for me is an early one! I am normally out of bed and working by 6:30am on improving the website or mobile app. I then have a meeting at 9:15am where the development team and I go over the work we have been doing and discuss what we are planning to do for the day. After the meeting I continue to work on functionality and site maintenance.
What’s your background?
I started my career as a Software Engineer at an IT consultancy where I spent 3 years learning the ins and outs of digital product design before joining Groop.
What skills do you need for your job?
Problem solving and willingness to learn are possibly two of the most important, as is the ability to break down complex requirements into smaller ones, so that it becomes easier to build complex functionality that our users will love.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The satisfaction that comes with building a product that genuinely helps people and aims to do good in the world.
How do you spend your spare time? (What volunteering do you do outside of work?)
I enjoy socialising, watching & playing football (although it is probably more like attempting than playing!) and watching the odd episode of Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares. I also love the outdoors, so I spend a lot of time walking and visiting various places, Dorset, various spots in Wiltshire and the peak district are some of favourite locations in the UK.
I also volunteer as a mentor to aspiring developers that are trying to break into the tech industry by helping them with their skills and going over interview techniques with them.
Any recommendations to share?
Recently I have got into Modern Family and am really enjoying that, I would recommend giving that a try if you like sitcoms.
